Mariano Mayol
Mariano Mayol Pizá (Palma, Mallorca, 1965)
Mariano Mayol began his university studies in law, studying until the third academic year when he finally decided to abandon them to dedicate himself solely to the plastic arts, specifically to painting. Mayol’s works move between abstract and figurative tendencies, while in his beginnings he opted for geometric abstraction, creating works through which he dealt with various themes from a dreamlike and symbolic world, also themes of metaphysical roots as well as the universe, but with the passage of time it was introduced towards a more figurative art, but without ever abandoning abstraction.
With regard to Mayol’s figurative world, it is worth noting his great source of inspiration: cartography and nautical and maritime charts that will become the theme par excellence of the works of recent years. Mayol will feel a deep interest, almost obsessive, in describing in his works plans and maps of both his hometown (Palma) and the maritime coasts of Mallorca and the rest of the islands that make up the Balearic archipelago.
The sea will be the other great protagonist of his compositions, whether they are figurative or abstract, where the color blue will permeate his works almost completely. Both themes are the means used by the artist realistically (maps) and unreal (abstract compositions) to express his inner thoughts about the world, issues that escape the human being of metaphysical origin, where the sea as origin symbolizes the beginning and the end.
Mariano Mayol has a long and important artistic career both locally, nationally and internationally, thus highlighting his first exhibition (1988) which took place at the renowned Ferran Cano Gallery and simultaneously at the 4 Gats Gallery, two emblematic places.
He has participated in important art fairs such as ARCO and Art Basel and has exhibited individually on countless occasions nationally and internationally, a clear example is the individual exhibition that took place at the Galerie Art-Concept in Munich in 1988 and in local territory.
The exhibition ”Seeds of light” in Can Prunera (2019) stands out. Among other merits, it is worth noting several prizes and awards for the artist such as the Ciutat de Palma Antoni Gelabert for Visual Arts.
